RECIPE IDEA: 4 Ways to Make Bacon
Hi. It’s Lois at Recipe Idea Shop, telling you about one of my favorite foods, Bacon, and telling you four ways to make bacon. I’ve often said I could be vegetarian if it wasn’t for bacon (actually, pork—I might be a pork-a-terian).
Bacon is one of those meats that makes just about everything taste better, in my humble opinion. I’ve been making bacon since I was about 8 years old (maybe younger). That’s about the time that I learned if I burned the bacon, people wouldn’t eat as much of it, so there would be more for me! I don’t intentionally burn bacon anymore, and I try to limit myself to two pieces of bacon because it is so full of fat and nitrites.
But did you know you can buy “uncured” bacon at Costco and it doesn’t contain nitrites? I only recently learned this. A friend told me about it and I haven’t yet tried it.
My favorite bacon is thick-cut, peppered bacon, but it doesn’t work well for a Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich. For that, it’s best to have the thinner cut bacon.
I’m sure that just like leaving your lover, there are 50 (or more) ways to cook bacon. I’m going to tell you how to make it four ways. All are easy. My favorite way to make it is in a cast iron skillet, frying in its own fat. And then I fry our eggs in the drippings. Yum! We don’t do that very often, however, because some people say that the bacon absorbs or increases the bad things about bacon (and I find it splatters more). I personally think that’s malarky, but I’m no expert. I’m just a home cook who likes bacon. Here are a couple of options; the square pan with the ridges would allow the bacon grease to drain away from the cooking meat. And get yourself a splatter guard to prevent the grease from splattering everywhere.
We have a microwave bacon pan, which is nice because the fat drains away as it cooks so it is not as full of grease, and I generally make mine this way. (You do have to turn your microwave’s turntable off to use it because the pan is square and won’t let the turning device turn.) However, there are those folks who say the microwave is bad for you, too. My response: If you live long enough, you will find out everything is bad for you.
If you have a griddle, you can cook it on that. Again, the grease drains away. It helps to put a bacon press on top of the bacon to keep it flat like they do at diners when they cook bacon on the short-order grill, but you don’t have to; it will cook just fine without it. Or, make your life easy and get a Cuisinart Griddle with the built in “press.”
Finally, you can bake it in the oven on a jelly roll pan, which is probably one of the simplest ways to make bacon for a big crowd. I suggest you drain your bacon on paper towels before eating it, no matter which method you use.
