RECIPE IDEA: Serve Bacon Wrapped Chestnuts at Your Holiday Party

Hi. It’s Lois at Recipe Idea Shop, telling you about an old favorite, Bacon Wrapped Chestnuts, a super easy appetizer that is loved by most people. When I was in my 20s and 30s, these appetizers used to be served at nearly every gathering, and they were the first to disappear at the party.
Bacon Wrapped Chestnuts are so easy your kids or grandkids can make them. And they are delicious! The water chestnut is crunchy, mild and a bit sweet; the bacon is, well, bacon—salty, chewy and scrumptious. (You know how much I like bacon.)
Allergy-free Party Planning
I had to tell you about these because, with the holidays approaching, I’m writing an article for Sixty and Me about easy allergy-free party planning. It’s an appropriate article for anyone and I encourage you to watch for it.
As I’ve written before, I have some pretty severe sensitivites to dairy and gluten, so attending a party or event can be super challenging for me. In fact, last week I attended an evening networking event that included food and there was not a single food offered that I could eat! Every single dish had both dairy and gluten. Since I didn’t want to get sick, I didn’t eat anything. That was an expensive and uncomfortable experience that I won’t let happen again.
How could I have prevented this experience? I should have double-checked with the event planner ahead of time. In the past, she had always offered choices that included options I could eat. So I didn’t ask ahead of time what my options would be. I won’t do that again! Had I known ahead of time that all of the food offered would not suit my needs, I would have eaten before I went to the meeting or I would have brought food along to share that suited my needs.
If you are planning a party, at the very least, offer a fruit platter and a raw or roasted vegetable platter to your guests. No matter what allergies they have, they should be able to find something in those two offerings that they can eat.
Here are two more options that would meet your vegan friends’ requirements: Walnut Crusted Artichokes (these are SO good) and Cucumber Salsa (with chips). And while you’re making the salsa, consider making a Mexican Layered Dip (be sure to use vegetarian refried beans so your vegetarian friends can eat it).
Bacon Wrapped Chestnuts, Fun & Delicious Party Food
Most people will love these Bacon Wrapped Chestnuts. And they will be gone in no time, so make a lot of them. Of course, vegans and vegetarians won’t be able to eat them. People who don’t eat pork, such as people of the Muslim or Jewish faiths, will also need to avoid them. If your guests are Muslim or Jewish, there are other food restrictions that need to be considered, especially if they strictly follow their food rules. I am not an expert on the rules, so I won’t go into that here. Again, they should be able to eat the fruits and vegetables on your platters (as long as they aren’t wrapped in or next to meat).

This is such a simple recipe. The only tools you need are (affiliate links): a small paring knife, a cutting board, a baking sheet with a lip (jelly roll pan), and wooden toothpicks (sturdy ones work best and don’t use the kind with fancy plastic at the top because you have to bake these appetizers).
