Walnuts have a slightly bittersweet taste that some people dislike, including me—but toasting the walnuts changes the flavor. Toasting (or roasting) walnuts in the oven with a bit of butter and salt gives them a slightly sweet taste and extra crunch. You can also toast pecans using this recipe.

    raw walnuts in a bag

I had a health scare a few years ago when a prescribed medication affected my liver in a very bad way. I researched how to heal your liver, and walnuts were one of the foods with the most benefits, not only for the liver but also for the heart, brain, and bones. Eat a few walnuts every day!

It took almost a year for my liver enzymes to return to normal. Now, I'm leery of taking new medications, but at the age of 70, I can't pass on them all.

I purchased several bags of walnuts from a local produce stand last Fall, and we've eaten them all. The produce stand purchased them from the Amish auction in Kentucky, and the walnuts were so good. They had a fresh taste, unlike the packaged, name-brand walnuts from the grocery store.

coat raw walnuts with a bit of butter for toasting

To add pizazz to the walnuts, I toasted them in the oven with a light coating of butter and salt. I'm talking about 3 cups of walnuts and 1 tablespoon or less of butter with ¼ teaspoon of salt. You can adjust the butter and salt to your taste.

    How To Toast Walnuts

    Ingredients:

    • 3 cups walnuts
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • ¼ teaspoon salt

    Instructions:

    • Place walnuts in a plastic storage bag.
    • Pour melted butter and salt into the bag of walnuts.
    • Shake the bag to coat the walnuts completely.
    • Pour the walnuts onto a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.
    • Bake in a 350-degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes.
    • Check walnuts during cooking, starting at 8 minutes, to ensure they don't overbrown.

    Notes:

Try various seasonings, such as Creole seasoning, garlic powder, seasoned salt, cinnamon, etc.

    melted butter

I placed the walnuts in a plastic storage bag, poured in the melted butter, added the salt, and then shook the bag well to coat the walnuts.

    how to toast walnuts

Oven temperatures vary, so check your walnuts or pecans after 8 minutes and continue checking until they are toasted perfectly. I use a convection oven, so the cooking time may be different by a minute or two.

    oven toasted or roasted walnuts

The toasted or roasted walnuts are nice and crunchy with just a touch of salt, and the small amount of butter doesn't add very many calories.

Eat a handful as a snack or toss a few on a cup of yogurt or oatmeal for breakfast.
