What is the coolest cocktail? A pina colada, of course. When I think of a pina colada, I think of warm breezes and calm surf. The yummy mix of rum, pineapple, and coconut is like a little sip of Heaven.
There are more pina colada recipes than stars in the sky. I'm sharing a classic pina colada recipe today and two of my favorite twists on the original.
Pina Colada Cocktail Recipes
Did you know the Spanish term Piña Colada means 'strained pineapple?' History says the cocktail was created in Puerto Rico, where it is the official national drink.
Some say a pirate named Roberto Cofresi concocted the recipe for his crew in the early 19th century. Others say Ramon 'Monchito' Marrero, a bartender, created the drink in 1954. We don't care who created the drink, do we?
Pineapple, which makes the Pina Colada so yummy, is a symbol of hospitality and it's good for you. Pineapple contains Bromelain, which has anti-inflammatory properties. Really! When I had eye surgery, my doctor recommended I have a serving of fresh pineapple every day for two weeks before my surgery. Who knew! Let's take a look at the recipes....
Fancy White Rum Pina Colada Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup pineapple chunks
- ½ cup coconut milk
- 1 ½ oz white rum (45ml)
- ½ lime
- 2 tablespoon agave syrup
- ½ cup ice
- 3-4 glazed cherries (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Combine the pineapple chunks, coconut milk, lime juice, and agave syrup in a blender.
- Add white rum and a few ice cubes to the blender and blend until the ice is crushed.
- Pour the mocktail into glasses and garnish with a pineapple slice and glazed cherries.
- Serve cold in tall glasses and enjoy your delicious piña colada
Classic Pina Colada Cocktail
Ingredients:
2 oz White Rum
3 oz Pineapple Juice
1.5 oz Coconut Cream
Crushed Ice
Garnish of choice
Mix It Up:
Fill a blender with ice. Add the rum, pineapple juice, and coconut cream to the blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.
Pour the mixture into a hurricane glass, garnish, and serve with a straw. Enjoy!
Bartenders like to put their unique spin on the traditional Pina Colada cocktail. Mango, passion fruit, banana, and strawberry, are popular takes on the original. Frozen Piña Coladas are served from machines in some bars and even gas stations. And let me tell you....they contain a lot of alcohol.
How To Make A Mango Colada
Ingredients:
6 oz white rum
2 oz dark rum
6 oz cream of coconut
4 oz pineapple juice
½ Mango chopped small
2-3 cups ice
Mix The Cocktail:
Place mango, rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut in a blender and blend on high. Add ice slowly while the machine is running until the drink reaches a slushy, thick consistency. Pour the mango colada into tall glasses and garnish as desired.
How To Make A Banana Colada Cocktail
Ingredients:
2 ounces light rum
¾ ounce banana liqueur
3 ounces pineapple juice
2 ounces cream of coconut
1 banana
1-2 cups ice
Mix The Cocktail:
In a blender, add rum, banana liqueur, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and banana. Add ice a little at a time and blend until perfect consistency. Pour into a short hurricane glass. Garnish with a banana slice.
