"I am enough" is sometimes a hard concept to embrace. I know. I've been there.

Ahhh, I Am Enough
It's good to know that you are enough, right?
Like many people, I grew up in a dysfunctional family. To cope, I learned to excel at much of what I did. I went to school, got good grades, took care of myself, worked, and often took care of my siblings. But I "knew" I could do better if I applied myself. I thought that I wasn't good enough because I only worked as hard as needed to get "high Bs."
I "should" on myself way too often. You know, I should do this and I should do that. If only I tried harder, I could be perfect. And I really tried to be perfect. I "knew" I "should" be perfect.
I admit I did that until my life fell apart when I was in my mid-30s.
Then What Did I Do?
I took a breath. I decided to pause. And I didn't make any decisions. I sat in silence and considered what I wanted. And then I committed myself to setting and achieving some goals. I reached many of them. Some fell by the wayside.
I realized that some of the goals and dreams I set when I was younger were not what I wanted as time went on. And I tossed them aside.
- I started to pat myself on the back for every accomplishment, whether big or little.
- I got through the day.
- I cleaned the bathroom.
- I checked off two things on my task list. Some days I only did one. Some days I did five.
- I paid my rent.
- I went back to school and finished my B.A.
- I took care of my kids.
- I got a better job.
- I started freelancing.
- I got a new client!
- I was kind to someone.
- I began to write happy notes of appreciation to people I know.
- I realized I was kinder to others than I am to myself.
- I began to listen—really listen—when someone paid me a compliment.
- I began to be kinder to myself.
- I accepted that many people love me, and they probably have good reasons why they do.
- I accepted that I am lovable.
- I started reading and writing daily affirmations for myself.
- I realized that I am grateful for all that I have had, all that I do have, and all that I will have.
- I learned that I am enough, just as I am.
I know that I have to keep reading, writing and learning to maintain my positivity. I pray that you know that you are enough, too. Please send positive thoughts out to the universe. Be kind to every living soul. And take care of yourself. Because you are enough. You are lovable. And you are perfect, just the way you are.
