White Gravy with green peas is a simple 20-minute gravy made from milk, sometimes called creamed peas. It is tasty over fish or chicken. Just add sausage instead of peas and more pepper for old-fashioned sausage gravy.

This old-fashioned rich and creamy gravy dish is the ultimate comfort food. I'm not sure who came up with the idea to add peas to gravy. Just think about it - do peas sound like a good fit with white gravy? No....but it works!

When my mom made Salmon Patties or a Salmon Loaf for supper, she always made white gravy (milk gravy) with green peas.

My husband makes a similar fantastic sausage gravy. It's made the same way, except you fry ground sausage, drain some of the fat, and make the white gravy with the drippings. Add the sausage back in, season with salt and pepper, and eat over biscuits. Good ole "country gravy."

For this recipe, you will need measuring cups and spoons, a medium pan, and a whisk. Do yourself a favor and buy a great set of pans.

Creamed Peas or White Gravy with Green Peas Recipe

    Ingredients

    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • ¼ cup flour (for gluten free, eliminate flour and use 2 tablespoons corn starch instead)
    • 2 cups milk
    • ¼ to ½ teaspoon pepper
    • ½ to 1 teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • ¾ cup frozen peas

    Instructions

    • Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
    • Stir in the flour (or cornstarch) and make a roux (browned flour and oil).
    • Mix in the milk and stir until thoroughly combined and the gravy thickens.
    • Add the pepper, salt and nutmeg and stir. You may omit the nutmeg.
    • Taste and adjust seasonings.
    • Stir in the peas and heat for about 5 minutes until the peas are heated through.
    • Serve over Salmon Patties

This gravy is excellent over sirloin steak, chicken, meatloaf, or turkey breasts. You can also serve the creamed peas with a side salad.

Potatoes make an excellent addition to white gravy and peas, but boil the potatoes until done before adding them to the gravy.

Other ingredients you can add to the gravy are garlic powder, onions, various herbs, and ham or bacon, to name just a few.
