The Corelle dinnerware brand (see more dinnerware brands), originally introduced by Corning, has been in production since the 1970s. It is now a WorldKitchen LLC brand.

Over the years, many Corelle dinnerware patterns have been introduced; some are now discontinued, but many more are still available.

Over time, the most popular pattern is Winter Frost White which was introduced in 1970 and is still in production. Other top-selling patterns by Corelle include Country Cottage, Simple Lines, City Block, and Splendor. We'll look at some patterns in a bit.

The history of Corelle is pretty amazing. Over the last 40+ years, the brand has passed many milestones and has produced thousands of dinnerware patterns.

How to Care For Corelle Dinnerware

One reason Corelle dishes are so popular is that they are easy to care for. Most pieces of Corelle sets are microwave-safe dinnerware, and dishwasher-safe, and the plates are oven-proof in a preheated oven up to 350 degrees (F).

The product comes with instructions for use and care and the bottoms of the currently produced patterns are usually marked in regard to the intended use. As long as it is used in accordance with its intended use, and not dropped or banged, the dinnerware will last for years. Honestly, they are very hard to break.

A Corelle dinnerware set is easy to care for. The plates and bowls are made of glass and the mugs are made of porcelain or stoneware. The information that comes with the product will tell you exactly what you have and how to take care of it. The bottom or back of the pieces also contains some information.

Here are some things you need to know to take care of your Corelle dinnerware set so that it will last long-term.

Watch the heat

Corelle plates and bowls can be used to reheat food in a conventional oven or in the microwave if the temperature does not exceed 350° F. They can also be heated in the oven as long as the oven is preheated and they are microwave-safe for reheating food. The mugs are safe for heating drinks in the microwave.

The dishes are NOT tolerant of direct heat or sudden temperature changes.

Therefore, they cannot be placed in the broiler, in a toaster oven, under the browning element of a microwave, or on the stovetop. Open flame will harm the dinnerware. Sudden changes, such as placing a hot dish in dishwater, handling it with a wet cloth, or filling a cold cup with hot liquid can damage the dinnerware.

Microwave use should not include using plates to support convenience food such as popcorn bags or frozen food with browning wrappers. The heat dispelled from the packaging can break the dishes. You should never heat empty or close to empty dishes in the microwave. Oil and butter can be heated or melted in the microwave, but overheating can damage the dinnerware.

Wash with care

Corelle dinnerware can be hand-washed using non-abrasive cleansers. Scouring pads and abrasive cleansers will damage the dishes. The dishes are dishwasher safe; however, they must be placed where the dishes won't bump against other dishes. The dishes should not be soaked because the application of heat after the dishes have been soaked can cause the glaze to crack.

Avoid drops and hits

A Corelle dinnerware set is tough; however, the pieces are made of glass, porcelain, or stoneware. Dropping them, allowing them to bump against other dishes, or hitting them with hard objects will cause breakage.

Replacing Corelle Dishes

If by chance you do manage to break one of your Corelle plates or bowls during normal household use, you do need to be aware of the warranty offered by Corelle. You can likely get it replaced. More on this below. 

Discontinued Corelle dinnerware pieces are often available on dinnerware replacement websites, but with a little luck, you can find the pieces of Corelle dinnerware sets that are still in production. Some vendors do sell the pieces individually as well so that you can replace a piece without buying a whole set.

How do you find replacements for pieces of Corelle dinnerware?

Corelle dinnerware is a best seller when it comes to everyday dinnerware. It is tough because of the way it is manufactured, but occasionally a piece may get broken and the need for Corelle dinnerware replacements will come into play.

However, if the pattern that needs replacement is still in production, you can likely find individual pieces for sale at a department store that carries the Corelle dinnerware set or get them from amazon.

Because the brand is so popular, garage sales and online auctions are great places to shop. You probably won't find individual pieces there; because the pieces don't break very often, but it will be well worth it to you to buy a used set to use as replacements as you need them if you intend to keep the set long-term.

Corelle warranty

One thing that you should know is that Corelle dinnerware is guaranteed for three years after the purchase against cracks, breaks, or chips. If your dinnerware was damaged during normal household use and you have used it in line with the safe use and care instructions provided by Corelle, it is worth checking to see if you can get a free replacement.

Discontinued Corelle dinnerware can also be found in online auctions as well as through replacement companies. Replacement companies do sell them by the piece.

When shopping online for dinnerware or replacements, it is good to know the pattern name. If you browse enough, you will likely find a piece with the name of the pattern; however, that is something that I really like about Corelle.
