Making a Grilled Hamburger is simple, whether indoors or outdoors. And it's a real comfort food at our house.

Grilled Hamburger with Grilled Onions and Peppers. Yum. Plate by Elizabeth Krome at Quail Run Pottery.
Grilled Hamburger, the all-American meal, is worth celebrating.
May is National Hamburger Month. What a great time to make a Grilled Hamburger, right? In my humble opinion, hamburgers are terrific any day. I like my Grilled Hamburger with a little salt and pepper. Don likes his with minced garlic and grated onion. He mixes the garlic, onion, salt and pepper into the meat mixture before he makes patties. Everyone raves about them. Yet, I prefer the simple, pure taste of beef.
What to Look For
When I make hamburgers, I generally get somewhat leaner ground beef, but when you are grilling it, it may actually be better to have a little more fat. It burns off as you cook it anyway, and fat provides flavor and the ability to stick the meat together as it cooks. Look for ground meat that is listed as 80/20 (80 percent lean beef/20 percent fat) or 92/8 (92 percent lean beef/8 percent fat).
Don is the grill master, but cooking a hamburger on the grill is easy enough for me to do. Nevertheless, I generally use our indoor grill. It cooks in half the time because it cooks on both sides at once.
Meal Pairing
A Grilled Hamburger meal is easy. And in Virginia, we can grill all year round, but we do tend to do more of it when it is warm outside (spring, summer, fall). I love it with Maple Baked Beans and Egg-y Potato Salad. How about you?
To serve, just add some condiments—ketchup, mustard, dill pickles, raw onion slices, sliced tomatoes, and/or lettuce—and serve it with or without a bun. I haven't found a good gluten free bun; however, the Glutino Gluten Free English Muffins are good. If you know of a good gluten free brand for hamburger buns, please comment!
