Spicy mustard sauce with egg rolls, chicken, or roast beef ramps up the flavor. You can make hot, spicy mustard sauce at home in only 10 minutes. It is simple and delicious and has only six ingredients!

When you dip into this spicy mustard dipping sauce, you’ll feel like you're eating the hot mustard sauce at a Chinese restaurant. You can also spread this mustard on a sandwich.

    Why This Recipe Works

My mouth waters just thinking about this simple dipping sauce. It has just the right amount of bite to it, along with a bit of sweetness. The hardest part of making it is gathering the ingredients. Then it’s measure, dump, and whisk until smooth.

This spicy mustard sauce is packed with flavor and good to offer with chicken kabobs, roast beef sandwiches, or just about any meat or vegetable where you need a little added zip.

It is similar to the hot mustard sauce you can get in a packet at most Chinese restaurants, but there's no monosodium glutamate (MSG) to mess up your system. Lots of folks seem to be allergic to MSG.

    Easy Spicy Mustard Recipe

You will need Dijon mustard, powdered yellow mustard, maple syrup, white vinegar, lite soy sauce, and cayenne pepper.

Dijon mustard is the best kind of mustard to use in this recipe. Named for a town in France where the mustard originated, this mustard is made from brown mustard seeds with a spicy hot flavor. It is often used for salad dressings to add a tangy bit of spice to the flavor. You’ll want to buy the smooth Dijon mustard for this recipe.

Powdered yellow mustard. I highly recommend Coleman’s powdered mustard. It has a distinctly hot, tangy flavor with a sharpness to it.

    Substitutions & Variations

The two recommended mustards are the most important ingredients. I really wouldn’t substitute any other styles of mustard. However, you can vary the other ingredients.

Honey can be substituted for maple syrup without changing the flavor significantly.

Regular soy sauce or tamari sauce can be substituted for lite soy sauce. If you need a gluten-free soy sauce, read the label. I use lite soy sauce because it has less sodium in it.

Hot paprika can be substituted for cayenne pepper. I find that hot paprika has just a little less bite to it than cayenne and still provides excellent flavor.

How To Make Spicy Mustard Sauce

It's so simple! Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl or measuring cup and whisk until smooth. Serve immediately.

    Storing

You can store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a week. I prefer glass containers because they don’t retain the odors or tastes of previously stored foods.

    FAQs

Why should I use Dijon mustard instead of yellow mustard?

Dijon mustard has a distinctive flavor with a bit of tang that is sharper and more flavorful than other mustards. Yellow mustard has a lot of vinegar in it so the flavor of the mustard seed is not as strong.

Can I use honey instead of maple syrup?

Yes. Substitute honey in equal measure for the syrup and the flavor will be similar, though less robust.

Can I use brown sugar instead of maple syrup?

Yes. Brown sugar has a rich flavor due to the added molasses and will dissolve in the sauce easier than other sugars. I have not tried this, but I would substitute half a teaspoon of brown sugar plus two tablespoons of water for the maple syrup.

I am not the biggest mustard fan out there, but this does appeal to me.
